If resistance is out of spec from the chart below, the solenoid is faulty. With the pan removed, pull the connector off of the solenoid you wish to test and check the resistance across the two pins. It is easiest to test the solenoids with the transmission pan removed - individual pins of the transmission connector can be probed, however space is extremely limited. Individual solenoids can be tested using a digital multimeter. If you experience a blinking Tow/Haul indicator light but find no codes, your code reader lacks support for the system. Pulling transmission codes on the 5R110W requires special equipment, such as AutoEnginuity most over-the-counter, inexpensive code readers will not pull codes specific to the transmission system. When it's a mechanical issue, you would more likely hear noise/grinding, or it would be slipping at full throttle, not go into any gear, and/or the fluid would usually smell burned and turn a dark color. If you can manually shift the transmission and it goes into the correct gear, but doesn't automatically shift like it should, it is probably because of one of these solenoids. It typically begins with a random mis-shift, when you come to a stop it will stay in 2nd and not downshift to 1st, or when you take off it will not upshift to 2nd. When you take the car to a transmission shop they might say it needs a whole rebuild, when often it is just the shift solenoids failing. These two solenoids together shift the transmission to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear. If you have an automatic transmission that came with a 7M, 1JZ, or 2JZ, and it starts shifting improperly, the most common cause is the #1 or #2 shift solenoid going bad.
